Happy Frederick Douglass Day
15 01 2007While reading a heated online discussion today about MLK and his deservedness of a national holiday, someone posted that Frederick Douglass was at least as deserving if not more so, and posted the following quote:
Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the roar of its many waters.
I’ve never seen that before, but holy moly, isn’t that simply amazing? If that doesn’t fit todays political and social climate dead on, i don’t know what ever possibly could.
Frederick Douglass Day is February 14th.
One of his amazing speeches, What To the Slave Is the 4th Of July, blows the hypocrisy of this celebration into America’s face. And it’s relevant today…just substitute a few nouns and pronouns here and there.
