The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire…

My office at work burned down.

In the early hours of December 6th, 2005, our work office caught fire.
While the fire was contained within one room (my office/server room), the damage is considerable. While we are still (at this very moment) waiting for things to cool down so we can inventory, a rough estimate is that we have lost about $80,000 in equipment and untold man hours.
Additionally, I lost some personal stuff that I had on my desk. Not to mention my poor Powerbook….of note though: the Dell monitor on my desk is melted about 80% but still powers up. Now THAT will be a keepsake.
If you need to contact me in regards to this, please email scottmcdaniel@gmail.com. I will be adding pictures as the room cools and we can get more involved.

[...] He had his bouts with several problems. There were some problems with his memory, but we took care of those together, as a team. Sometimes he would pass out, lying helpless until I arrived in the middle of the night to revive him. We were close, USMail and I. And then, around December of last year, he had sudden hot flashes. The prognosis was not good. After an emergency operation, his brains were removed and transplanted into another body. Even this body was not perfect though. It was melted on top, and the front of this body was so warped that he couldn’t open his DVD drive. I mean, his mouth. [...]

[...] A year ago today, my office at work caught fire, destroying over $80,000 worth of laptops, servers and accessories. The fire was caused by a faulty UPS, and despite the fact that we were down for less than 18 hours, the resultant resbuilding and relocation slowed us down for many months. The funny thing is that today, the only eople who remembered or mentioned it were myself and my partner. Not a single other employee mentioned it. In a way, that makes me glad…we have come a long way, and the overwhelming sense of doom and gloom in the days following the fire were soon pushed aside by business as usual. We went from a $8 million company in 2005 to over $40 million this year, all while struggling to catch up and accommodate 60 new employees. It was a tough year, but in retrospect it bumped us into a different tier. One where doing what it takes to get the job done and making smart, fast decisions based on guts and instinct beats out endless meetings and hesitation. It was a good year. :) [...]
