Microsofts folly explained in one paragraph

From this article in the NYT about new tech Microsoft is exploring to make life ‘more like the Jetsons’. As always, they miss the more important, finer nuances while aiming for that big picture stuff.

“The technology behind Laura could cross over into a variety of fields. Mr. Horvitz predicted an elevator that senses when you are in the midst of a conversation and keeps its doors open until you are done talking.”

What about the rest of the people in the elevator?

This is the perfect example of why they don’t get it and fail so often. They push features and make them mandatory system-wide instead of offering choices and options and considering user interactions.

PS: I don’t want to ever ride in an elevator running Windows.

PPS: How about some sci-fi crap that exists in Japan already but they are trying to push as ‘upcoming tech’?
