McCain as Mighty Mouse

25 09 2008

From CBS:

(The Politico) House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.), a chief author of the economic rescue package, doesn’t think much of John McCain’s late entry into the negotiations.

“McCain is Andy Kaufman in his Mighty Mouse costume - ‘Here I Come to Save the Day,’” Frank said as he left a Thursday morning caucus meeting with House Democrats, saying the Republican presidential candidate’s decision to enter the mix “is not helpful.”

“He hasn’t been involved,” Frank said. “He doesn’t know anything about it.”

Frank, who has been working furiously to finalize legislation granting Treasury the authority to buy hundreds of billions in distressed mortgage-related assets, believes McCain’s entry “injects an…element of partisanship” into already tenuous negotiations.

“We are making very real progress,” the visibly tired chairman said. “This is a stunt. I hope people will be able to ignore it. He doesn’t bring anything to it.”

Note to readers born after, say, 1985 who never saw the Jim Carrey biopic “Man in the Moon”: Andy Kaufman was a popular comedian whose many bits included an understated rendition of the Mighty Mouse theme song.

The McCain media embargo

23 09 2008

Ok, this is getting surreal. No press conferences from McCain for 40 days, none for Palin in her 24 days so far. Today the media revolted and said we’re not going to cover you if you don’t give us access.

A few interesting links regarding this, and a funny video of the press being ignored and a McCain aide (poor soul) giving commentary.

VP Debate actually a softball game

22 09 2008

This is hilariously and unbelievably awesome. Here’s what Andrew Sullivan says - read the article for yourself (BugMeNot for the NYT is ‘readwitthis’ and ‘lala12345′) and see what you think.

The link: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/21/us/politics/21debate.html?_r=3&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1222093544-NPTB8rVOkxoqYwx2Ub0yNw&oref=slogin

Sullivan says:

At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

Are you fucking kidding me? We are now rigging the debate formats to compensate for a know-nothing, mendacious Manchurian candidate drilled in meaningless talking points? And the Obama team agreed to this? And so did the press?
